CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Jan. 31, 2025) – The Charlotte County Utilities Department Burnt Store Drinking Water System did not meet drinking water requirements last year. The utilities department is required by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to monitor the drinking water system for specific contaminants yearly. In 2024, the utilities department failed to collect the required one-time yearly sample for nitrate and nitrite, nitrogen-based chemicals commonly found in groundwater.
The utilities department took immediate corrective action and sampled the Burnt Store System in January 2025. The results showed that nitrate and nitrite were undetected, and the utilities department met drinking water standards. Processes have since been created to ensure that all future monitoring requirements are met.
Notices will be mailed to all Burnt Store Drinking Water System customers.
