Manatee Exclusion Grates

Project Description

Outfall culverts that were replaced or repaired due to hurricane damage are required to have a manatee exclusion grate installed.  These grates help prevent manatees from getting stuck in the culvert.  There are 35 culvert locations throughout the county that will have these grates installed.

There are 35 location throughout West County and Mid County.  These culverts outfall into tidal waterways.

Latest Updates

The pre-construction meeting with the contractor was held October 28, 2025.  The notice to proceed is January 5, 2026.  There is a delay to allow the contractor to visit each site, take exact measurements of each culvert, order material and fabricate the grates for each location.  Installation of the grates will begin January 5, 2026 and is anticipated to take a month to complete the work.

Funding source(s): Hurricane fund, with anticipated FEMA reimbursment.
